This Superstar customer spotlight is shining upon another notable individual and UPS Store customer, that makes a big impact in our community. Kathy Aloisio, is a Community Liaison with Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care. She carries within her a light of quiet understanding and compassion. Her light resonates from her ability to provide hope, and deal with loss. We also note, her love for her certified pet therapy dog, Lola, brings a beaming light of joy to her life.

As common as hospice has become, workers, indeed, still find it necessary to educate people on exactly how it works. Kathy has a driving passion to educate individuals, groups, and organizations about the services Kansas City Hospice offers. This passion comes from her own experience, and at the time, lack of knowledge about these services. “My family and I had an extremely unfortunate experience when my father was ill,” states Kathy, “If I had known then what I now know about hospice and the services available, it would have made the passing of my father much more bearable.”

The essence of hospice is caring for patients as they move toward the end of life, in peace and with minimal pain. As the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization puts it, hospice is about “caring” for one on the journey toward death, as opposed to “curing.”

The New Breed of Service Dog: Canine Caregivers for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Patients

Of the 2.6 million Americans each year who die, almost half, 1.2 million, die in hospice care. Their family members can take some semblance of peace knowing they died not alone in a hospital, but among loved ones in the place they saw as home.

With over 15 years of experience in health care and 2 years with Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, Kathy has come to appreciate the job’s grace, along with the deep, even spiritual satisfaction that accompanies her connection to patients and their families at one of the most difficult moments in their lives.

As a certified trainer for Second Wind Dreams, Kathy is delivering the Virtual Dementia Tour® in all types of settings… corporate, health care, long-term care, and community groups (to name a few). This tour enables caregivers to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face, and use the experience to provide better person-centered care.

Second Wind Dreams® is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams and the offering of educational programs including its flagship, sensitivity training, the Virtual Dementia Tour®.
